Learning Objectives:
- Review core terminology and characteristics related to maladaptive movement and the role of exercise in eating disorder populations.
- Appraise the challenges and benefits of including exercise during treatment for an eating disorder.
- Describe core philosophies in addressing maladaptive movement during treatment for an eating disorder.
- Describe the unique performance-related factors within sport that increase vulnerability to disordered eating and eating disorders.
- Explain the current scientific evidence on the relationship between eating disorders and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS).
- Identify the clinical signs, symptoms, and performance indicators suggestive of REDs and eating disorders in athletes.
- Discuss the short- and long-term health and performance consequences of untreated REDs and eating disorders in sporting populations.
- Apply evidence-informed strategies for secondary prevention, including effective screening, early recognition, and interdisciplinary management approaches tailored to athletes.
